The Latest & Greatest in Mandelic Acid

Mandelic Acid, an alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA) named after the German mandel (almond) and derived from bitter almonds, has been studied extensively at the Gateway Aesthetic Institute and Laser Center in Salt Lake City, Utah, for the past three years. We’ve all heard the benefits of various alpha-hydroxy acids for years and they are commonly used in many of our skin care products, but this one looks to be one that will lead the pack.
Research originally began to further explore the antibiotic nature of mandelic acid in hopes that paitents who suffer from wrinkles and acne would see improvement. It is useful in treating inflammatory non-cystic acne, suppressing pigmentation, and rejuvenating photo-aged skin. Its benefits extend into preparation for laser peeling procedures and aiding in the healing process after laser surgery.
Stronger than glycolic acid, a widely used AHA, mandelic acid have been shown in open clinical trials to assist in the following skin care concerns:
  • The appearance of fine lines and wrinkles improve in addition to a marked improvement in skin texture, without the skin irritation that can accompany the use of glycolic acid in high dosages.
  • Those who suffer from acne, melasma, lentigenes, and fine photoaging damage (wrinkles, dull complexion, skin texture) have seen significant results with repeated peeling with mandelic acid.
  • Trials on individuals with abnormal pigmentation saw a rapid improvement when treated with mandelic acid. For examples, those with melasma saw an improvement of up to 50% after 1 month of treatment.
  • The antibiotic nature of mandelic acid has shown remarkable results on patients with acne that is resistant to both oral and topical antibiotics.
  • Some of those with acne rosacea saw improvement with mandelic acid treatments.
  • Patients who have undergone laser skin resurfacing with a post-op regime that includes mandelic acid have seen fewer infections and less inflammation.
Mandelic acid and it’s amazing properties are currently very popular in Taiwan and we have chosen to bring it here to Honolulu for the benefit of our clients. With mandelic acid products alone, many clients have been able to control their acne – without using extra products! We are all familiar with the natural sponges found in any body shop or drugstore, but they are typically salt water sponges. The health and skin benefits are abundant from fresh water sponges of the genus Spongilla.
Approximately twenty species of freshwater sponges within the genus Spongilla are currently known to dwell in lakes and slow streams. They are found attached to rocks and logs, filtering the water of microscopic aquatic organisms – protozoa, bacteria, and other free-floating pond organisms. Fresh-water sponges, unlike salt-water sponges, are exposed to more varied and adverse environmental conditions. This hostile environment causes Spongilla to develop gemmules, internal buds resulting from asexual reproduction, as a means of dormancy. The gemmules develop during extreme cold or other harsh conditions and are resistant to drying out (desiccation), freezing, and a lack of oxygen (anoxia). Even after the “mother sponge” has died, the gemmules can lie around for long periods of time until conditions improve and the gemmules resume growing into new sponges.
Spongilla is very popular in Europe & Asia, but is just now coming on to the natural health scene and in use by cosmetologists in the United States. Spongilla contains seaweed that penetrates the skin. Spongilla crystals have shown to assist in the healing of bruises, arthritis, radiculitis, and rheumatism by reducing inflammation and improving localized circulation of the blood.
In cosmetology, Spongilla is usually used in the form of facial masks and professional peels. Once ground into a fine powder, Spongilla is beneficial in: reducing acne, bruises, spots from pimples and boils, blackheads, hyperpigmentation, blemishes, large pores, sun damage, loss of elasticity, wrinkles, uneven surface texture, sagging skin, and clarifying other skin impurities. Spongilla is beneficial to all skin types, even dry and aging skin.
Nature and its benefits continue to be a never-ending source of new surprises and pure beauty!

Collagen & You…Breaking Down the Hype

Posted on 下午1:35, under

A type of protein, collagen is one of the most plentiful proteins present in the bodies of mammals, including humans. It makes up 25 – 35% of the protein content in the entire body. An essential part of the body, some people refer to it as the glue that holds the body together. Collagen works interdependently with elastin to support the body’s tissues. At a basic level, it gives body tissues their form, providing firmness and strength, while elastin provides much needed flexibility. A lack of collagen causes serious diseases, including brittle bone disease.

“That’s all well and good, but what does this have to do with me and my skin?” you may ask. And why do I keep hearing about it so much?
The main structural component of the lower layer of the skin, the Dermis, collagen works with keratin to provide the skin with strength, flexibility, and resilience. Unfortunately, as we age, collagen degrades, leading to wrinkles. Therefore, one important target of wrinkle prevention and elimination is to reduce the breakdown of collagen and increase its supply.

Improving Collagen Production Naturally…

At Pure Skin by Maggie, we firmly believe in treating the skin from the inside out, not just touching the surface with products. When it comes to the benefits of collagen, we want our clients to be aware of the basics, like food, that they can be doing to increase their body’s natural ability to produce collagen.

  • Vitamin C is a critical nutrient for collagen production in the skin. But the foods that we most often think of in conjunction with Vitamin C (citrus anyone?), are not actually the best sources! Try some of these superfoods: hot peppers, sweet peppers, guavas, black currants, lychees, oranges & grapefruits, dark leafy greens, peaches, kiwi, and tomatoes. There are many more good sources of Vitamin C, but be creative with these superfoods in your diet and you will see a difference.
  • Omega-3 fatty acids keep the skin soft and supple and can be found in cold water fish like salmon, tuna, sardines, cod and mackerel.
  • Bring on the garlic! The sulfur in garlic helps your body produce collagen while the taurine and lipoid acid supports damaged collagen fibers.
  • Tomatoes, particularly cooked, inhibit enzymes known as collagenases that destroy collagen.
  • For those of you who prefer meat to vegetables, your more tender beef and chicken feet actually have collagen in them as well!
There are many skin care products on the market and treatments available through estheticians and plastic surgeons that provide temporary improvement in the appearance of skin and wrinkles, but they should all be carefully researched and selected. For example, some expensive collagen creams claim to strengthen skin and make it more supple; however, collagen molecules are simply too large to be absorbed through the skin. Hyaluronic acid, however, has been proven to increase collagen production – even in test studies on subjects in their 70’s! There are many great treatments and products you can use at home that use this natural substance to improve the look and feel of your skin.

As often as possible, we recommend the most natural, gentle solutions to our clients needs. The natural functions of our body and the food we eat work together so well to provide us with what we need. And if you need a pick-me-up for your skin, come see us for a solution without all the hype!

Fall Tips For Healthy Skin

Posted on 下午3:04, under

Did you know that just because skin looks & feels oily does not mean it is well hydrated? Your skin can actually be dehydrated even though it is oily - all skin types need a combination of oil & water - even oily skin. We often meet clients that say "No!" when asked if they use moisturizer - mistakenly believing that their skin does not need it.

If you don't use moisturizer, your skin will let you know that it needs it - sometimes by creating even more oil. And sometimes your skin will break out because it needs more oil & water.

Winter is coming soon - even for those of us in Hawaii. Protect your skin with a good moisturizer. To make sure your skin is well hydrated, follow all of the steps in a good skin care routine: cleanser, toner, serum, moisturizer, sunscreen and a once a week hydrating mask. Using high quality products will make sure that your pores are not clogged & your skin will have the youthful, vibrant glow you desire!

The Importance of Lymphatic Drainage

Posted on 凌晨12:34, under

The lymphatic system of the body is not one we hear about often, despite the fact that it plays an important role in the health of our body. Previously categorized as a simple drainage network, we now know that it is far more complex and involved in many conditions from cancer to asthma.

A little about it…
To understand its importance, let’s start with a simple overview. The lymphatic system is an offshoot of our circulation system and is comprised of lymphatic vessels, lymph nodes, lymph (the fluid), and immune cells or lymphocites. It is a part of the body’s defense system. The lymph nodes remove microorganisms and other foreign substances, acting as a filtration system that keeps particulate matter, such as bacteria, from entering the bloodstream. Its primary functions are related to our immune, circulatory, and waste removal (the functions below are an excerpt from http://www.lymphnotes.com/article.php/id/151/).

• The lymphatic system aids the immune system in destroying pathogens and filtering waste so that the lymph can be safely returned to the circulatory system.
• To remove excess fluid, waste, debris, dead blood cells, pathogens, cancer cells and toxins from these cells and the tissue spaces between them.
• The lymphatic system works with the circulatory system to deliver nutrients, oxygen, and hormones from the blood to the cells that make up the tissues of the body.

So, why is this important if I’m not sick?
Detoxification is an ongoing process in our body. Common symptoms of a body overburdened with toxins include skin and hair problems, along with general deterioration of health. Our bodies are constantly exposed to environmental toxins…think about all of the pollution, pesticides, inorganic fertilizers, cleaning solutions, chemicals, and even water and food you are exposed to every day.

The lymphatic system plays a major role in removing waste products, beginning at a cellular level. Toxic buildup is inevitable if the lymphatic system is not working properly. Just as a drain in your house gets clogged, so can this very important part of your body. Acne and cellulite are often symptoms of inadequate lymphatic drainage.

What can I do to help my lymphatic system?
Manual lymphatic drainage is a form of massage that gently stimulates the lymphatic system. The light rhythmical massage strokes promote the elimination of metabolic waste products, excess fluid and bacteria. Stimulating the lymphatic system through massage activates the natural detoxifying functions as well as encouraging fluid circulation and cell regeneration.

This type of massage promotes deep relaxation and relief from chronic conditions such as sinusitis and arthritis. The results can also be seen in the clearing of certain types of acne, clearing areas of congestion such as swollen ankles / legs and puffy eyes, and even the promotion of scar tissue healing, torn ligaments and sprains.

At Pure Skin by Maggie, lymphatic drainage massage is an integral part of our Detox Facial and the Detox Facial with Microcurrent Face Lift. We begin each session with a complimentary consultation to evaluate your skin and your unique needs in order to customize the treatment. The facial itself, includes cleansing, exfoliation, and extraction followed by a 30 minute microcurrent non-surgical face lift targeted to the area of the face that concerns you most (eye area, forehead, around the mouth or nose, etc.). The gentle electric stimulation provides a firming and lifting effect to the muscles and skin. Some of the side benefits of microcurrent technology include increased blood circulation and lymphatic drainage. We follow the microcurrent treatment with a lymphatic drainage massage (Chinese and Japanese style) with pure essential oils and pure mineral oil that has been selected based on the your skin – sensitive, oily, combination, dry, acne, age, etc. When microcurrent is combined with the 50 minute Detox Facial, the results are incredible.

If you would like to find out if your acne is caused by a lack of lymphatic drainage, call us today to book a complimentary consultation. Beauty begins from the inside out and we are committed to helping our clients see the clear, radian skin they dream of.PhotobucketPhotobucketPhotobucket

The Organic Breakdown

Posted on 凌晨12:50, under

Everywhere we turn the word “organic” flashes from labels, signs, products, services, speeches, commercials… The Organic Revolution is here. But why do some say “Organic” and some say “Certified Organic” and some say “NOP Certified Organic” and “USDA Organic”? What does it all mean, anyway?
Organic
Quite simply, organic ingredients and produce are grown without the use of synthetic pesticides, synthetic fertilizers, genetically modified organisms (GMOs), sewage sludge, or ionizing radiation. This means that no antibiotics or growth hormones are given to the animals that produce meat, poultry, eggs and dairy products.

The USDA National Organic Program (NOP) defines organic this way:
“Organic food is produced by farmers who emphasize the use of renewable resources and the conservation of soil and water to enhance environmental quality for future generations. Organic meat, poultry, eggs, and dairy products come from animals that are given no antibiotics or growth hormones. Organic food is produced without using most conventional pesticides; fertilizers made with synthetic ingredients or sewage sludge; bioengineering; or ionizing radiation. Before a product can be labeled "organic," a Government-approved certifier inspects the farm where the food is grown to make sure the farmer is following all the rules necessary to meet USDA organic standards. Companies that handle or process organic food before it gets to your local supermarket or restaurant must be certified, too.”

Anyone growing and selling organic ingredients whose annual sales are less than $5,000 can advertise their products as ‘organic’ as long as their record keeping is up to date (in case of an audit) and they do not use the “certified” statement or USDA seal.

Still, not all “organic” is created equal!
The USDA has defined three categories for labeling organic products.

100% Organic: Made with 100% organic ingredients

Organic: Made with a minimum of 95% organic ingredients

Made with Organic Ingredients: Made with a minimum of 70% organic ingredients and including
a strict regulation that the remaining 30% can contain no genetically modified organisms
(GMOs)

Any product that contains less than 70% organic ingredients may list organically produced ingredients on the side or back panel of the packaging; however, they cannot make any claims of being organic on the front of the packaging or product name.

Certified Organic = USDA Organic = NOP (National Organic Program) Certified Organic
The USDA has put in place a set of national standards that must be met – both for food grown in the US or imported. An item is considered “certified organic” when it has been grown according to strict standards that are verified by independent state or private organizations. This includes annual inspections of fields and processing facilities, detailed record keeping, and periodic testing of soil and water to ensure compliance with set standards.

The use of the USDA Organic seal is voluntary; however, anyone using the seal on products that do not meet the specific restrictions for certified organic ingredients can be fined up to $10,000.
Under the current USDA standards, only edible ingredients are eligible for the USDA Organic seal. Progress is being made for standards for the cosmetic industry. While this is not in place yet, during the development of our new line of organic skin care products, we have followed the current USDA standards.

Pure Skin by Maggie is committed to bringing you the most pure skin care available. When we say that our new line of products is NOP Certified Organic – we mean it!

The Benefits of Witch Hazel

Posted on 晚上10:53, under

The Benefits of Witch Hazel

A little history…

The clear liquid extract of witch hazel that we are familiar with is produced from the leaves and bark of the North American witch hazel shrub, or Hamamelis virginiana. This extract has astringent, antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antibacterial, antifungal, and anesthetic properties that make it indispensible in various medicinal and cosmetic applications.
While some “home remedies” or “folk medicine” have become known as ‘old wives tales’, witch hazel, if used properly, is truly effective. It is one of the few natural remedies that have obtained US FDA approval for sale specifically for medicinal use.

The amazing witch hazel herb has been used throughout history for its medicinal purposes, both topical and internal. The Native Americans applied poultices of leaves and bark to treat hemorrhoids, wounds, painful tumors, insect bites and skin ulcers. In addition, they used witch hazel infusions for cuts, colds, heavy menstruation, tumors, and eye inflammation. Folk medicine has used it for everything from backache to itchy and dry skin, nosebleed, diarrhea, nervousness, and vaginitis.

Cosmetic Use
The bark, twigs, and leaves of the witch hazel shrub are all high in tannins, which give this plant its natural astringent properties. Astringents are used topically to dry and tighten tissues. Used on the face, witch hazel tightens pores and removes excess oil, which is why it is an excellent ingredient in natural skin toner. Cosmetics manufacturers also use it in various cleansers, masks and lotions.

Witch hazel is a key ingredient in Pure Skin by Maggie Herbal Balancing Toner for its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory benefits to acne prone skin. Witch hazel is typically extracted from the plant with alcohol into a tincture form, the most common type seen at pharmacies. However, we are committed to bringing out clients the gentlest, high-quality products possible and the witch hazel we use is alcohol-free.

Other Uses
Witch hazel is an important botanical to control bleeding, whether applied to a wound topically or taken internally for bleeding gums or ulcers. A compress of witch hazel extract is an effective treatment and can be applied to bedsores, bruises, poison ivy or oak, sore muscles, swelling, diaper rash, and hemorrhoids. For sore muscles, it can be used in either a cream or compress, or added to bath water. Athletes apply witch hazel extract to their muscles prior to vigorous workouts to help prevent muscle strain, or after a workout to relieve soreness.
To read more about internal uses of witch hazel and the proper way to prepare them (do not take the extract available at the pharmacy internally), see this article from Discover Health. http://health.howstuffworks.com/wellness/natural-medicine/herbal-remedies/witch-hazel-herbal-remedies.htm

Please note: External use can cause minor skin irritation for some people. Do not use on serious cuts, burns, or other wounds. Witch hazel extract from the pharmacy is intended for external use and should not be used close to the membranes of the eyes, as it does contain alcohol.

What is L-Cysteine

Posted on 晚上8:21, under

When looking into what is healthy for the body and the skin, there is so much information, frequently full of complex medical terms, that it becomes confusing. So, let’s take a product that is important to your body and break it down.

What is L-Cysteine? L-Cysteine is a non-essential amino acid, meaning it can be synthesized by humans, and one of only three that contain sulfur. The others, L-Glutathione and L-Taurine, are manufactured by the body from L-Cysteine in a multi-step process. It also helps synthesize glutathione, one of the body’s most important natural detoxifiers and antioxidants.

L-Cysteine is found in many high-protein foods, including chicken, eggs, milk, pork, cottage cheese, garlic, granola and onions.

What are the benefits of L-Cysteine? There are many benefits of L-Cysteine in the body and its effects on muscle tissue and the immune system are extremely important. It is essential in detoxification and the formation of skin, in addition to repairing hair and nail tissue, sun damaged skin and brown spots. The body uses L-Cysteine to produce antioxidants, in defense against harmful toxins, and to protect the body from damage caused by radiation. In addition, it protects the liver and brain from damage caused by the consumption of alcohol, drugs, and cigarettes.

L-Cysteine helps in maintaining optimal health and enhances immune system function. Other benefits include: reducing the effects of aging, promoting healing of severe burns, burning fat and building muscle. L-Cysteine is also effective in treating bronchitis, angina, and acute respiratory distress.

Should I take a supplement? While L-Cysteine supplements are available, they are not for everyone. People who endure physical stress, particularly body builders and athletes, and those who know they do not get enough in their diet should consider this supplement.

Myths about Sunscreen…

Posted on 晚上8:02, under

Myths about Sunscreen…

Tired of hearing about sunscreen? We all know it is important and helps prevent skin cancer and should be worn daily (which most of us don’t), yadda yadda yadda… But what don’t we know?? Whether you live in Hawaii where the sun is out year round or are enjoying a cold, cloudy winter, let’s explore some important facts about sunscreen…

1. Applying sunscreen once in the morning is enough.
False: If you are going to be out in the sun all day, sunscreen should be applied every 2 hours, and if you are sweating or swimming, every 40 minutes.

2. Children are exposed to the sun more than adults.
True: Up to 80% of lifetime sun exposure likely occurs before the age of 18. Teach children from a young age to protect their skin properly and they’ll establish healthy patterns for the rest of their life.

3. There is a huge difference in SPF ratings.
False: It’s a common misconception that SPF 100 is twice as effective as SPF 50. In reality, SPF 50 blocks 98% of UV rays compared to the 99% of SPF 100. And the old standby, SPF 30, blocks 96.7% of harmful UV rays.

4. A thin layer of sunscreen works just as well as more.
False: The recommended amount is more than most realize – one ounce or a full palm-full (the equivalent of a shot glass).

5. You should replace sunscreen frequently.
True: Like most products, sunscreen loses effectiveness and can stop working altogether. Effectiveness decreases after a year, so before relying on that bottle from last summer to protect you at the beach, go ahead and replace it.

6. Even on a cloudy day, you should wear sunscreen.
True: Up to 80% of UV rays can pass through clouds. Keep in mind that sand reflects 25% of the sun’s rays and snow, 80%.

7. Using sunscreen is enough to prevent skin cancer.
FALSE. Sunscreen is important in skin cancer prevention; however, it is not a complete solution. One of the most important preventive methods is avoiding sun exposure during the middle of the day when the sun’s rays are at their strongest. If you are heading to the beach, take an umbrella and a long sleeved cover-up. And don’t forget to protect your eyes with a quality pair of sunglasses.

Detox-Milk Thistle (修護肝臟功能)

Posted on 凌晨12:10, under

Milk thistle, an herb originally found in the Mediterranean area, is another supplement with many benefits to the body and skin. Used in herbal remedies for centuries, it is a safe supplement with no known side effects. Studies have shown its protective and regenerative properties for the liver in most liver diseases such as cirrhosis, jaundice and hepatitis. An amazing example of preventative medicine, milk thistle not only protects the individual cells of the liver from incoming toxins, but simultaneously causes the liver to cleanse itself of damaging substances like alcohol and drugs, medications, mercury and heavy metals, pesticides, and even poisonous mushrooms.

The benefits of milk thistle, however, are not limited to the liver. It is a demulcent, meaning it soothes injured skin. According to studies these demulcent properties soften and moisturize dry and cracked skin and soothe mild roughness of the skin’s surface. A common ingredient in natural moisturizers available commercially, milk thistle brings balance back to the skin and promotes healing. For those suffering from acne or eczema, the gentle healing effects of milk thistle taken internally and applied externally can bring dramatic results in the reduction of redness and irritation.

Available as a tea, a dried herb, pills and in skin care products, milk thistle is yet another natural ingredient in the quest for healthy, radiant skin. At Pure Skin by Maggie, you can find milk thistle from Solgar supplements. We are committed to helping our clients have their best skin and bringing them all of the tools necessary to making that happen.

Do you suffer from eczema, psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, skin rashes, or itchy skin? Would you like a gentle, natural supplement that promotes healing in the skin? Gotu Kola, a rejuvenating nervine, in its various forms has been used extensively for thousands of years in treating a lot of physical conditions such as hepatitis, stomach ulcers, mental fatigue, epilepsy and diarrhea. Even extremely serious conditions such as syphilis, rheumatism, leprosy and mental illness improve with the use of this herb.

Recent studies have confirmed the traditional uses of this herb, but have also shown its benefits in healing the skin by cleansing the blood to treat impurities and strengthening adrenal glands. Studies also confirm gotu kola’s ability to speed the healing of wounds and burns. It also improves blood flow while strengthening veins and capillaries. Gotu Kola is also very effective in the treatment of cellulite and keloids by slowing down the process of the natural hardening of the connective tissues beneath the skin’s surface that causes cellulite.

The applications for this supplement are varied and continued research confirms more. A supplement that helps to combat stress and depression, high blood pressure and anxiety, while treating some very difficult skin conditions is a must for anyone interested in natural healing for their body.

We carry Solgar supplements at Pure Skin by Maggie, including Gotu Kola. Call to make an appointment for an evaluation of your skin and see whether this herb might be part of an effective treatment for your skin. Pure skin from the inside out is something we strongly believe in and encourage all of our clients to consider.

Omega 3s and Beauty

Posted on 凌晨12:49, under

By Kat James
Fish oil is unquestionable proof that real “magic bullets” sometimes do exist.

My very first leap-of-faith, life-saving supplement regimen included fish oil, which—combined with alpha-lipoic acid, milk thistle, and probiotics—not only healed my sick liver but also completely transformed my skin and my moods. This was back at the dawn of the 90s, more than a decade before fish oil became known to the general public. Today, there are hundreds of studies on omega-3 oils showing dramatic reductions in everything from anger and anxiety to depression, from risk of sudden heart attack to insulin resistance, and from joint inflammation to bone loss and more recently breast cancer and diabetes.

Transformed Skin and Hair
The effect on my own skin from fish oil all those years ago—and ever since—was nothing short of amazing. Within a couple of months of starting this regimen, my skin literally “forgot” that it had been continually irritated, prone to horrible rashes on my eyes and chin, and unquenchably dry. It forgot that it needed heavy-duty lotions to avoid crawling with discomfort after every bath and shower. The space between my brows, the crannies on the sides of my nose, and my legs all failed to attend to their constant scaling. Dryness and inflammation had “left the building” along with my need for body moisturizers.
My hair was transformed dramatically from my fish oil regimen, too. It went from being super-brittle, coarse, and dull to being glossy and silky. I was able to grow it out long (and have it actually grow downward instead of outward) for the first time since childhood. Beyond the fact that hair is a biological appendage of the skin (which is why people with oily skin have oily hair and people with dry skin have dry hair), there are other possible explanations for fish oil’s effect on the hair. Hair health is particularly vulnerable to hormone imbalances and compromised circulation (many hair loss remedies focus on this). Stress is another cause for hair changes. Because omega-3s and fish oil have been proven to increase circulation, reduce the impact of stress, and help balance hormone activity, they offer proven benefit in each of these contributions to hair health.

Purchasing Omega-3s
Molecularly distilled fish oil supplements are the gold standard and recommended by more and more mainstream, as well as alternative, doctors. Avoid cheap drug store brands. Ironically, getting all your fish oil from fish could give you unwanted outcomes unless you are careful about avoiding mercury, as high mercury levels not only contribute to heart problems but are also known to cause hair loss. In order to get the omega-3s you are after, be sure to eat wild fish. I take a supplement that also contains GLA, an anti-inflammatory omega-6 fat found in hemp seeds and oil, evening primrose oil, and even more plentifully in borage seed oil. GLA has been shown to improve inflammatory skin conditions, such as psoriasis and eczema.

HydraFacial-Grace Lee

Posted on 中午12:56, under

About a week ago, I was honored to have Grace Lee, the morning anchor from KGMB-TV Channel 9, come into my salon for a treatment. She has lovely skin and my goal was simply to enhance that with a gentle procedure, so I selected the HydraFacial. The HydraFacial provides the benefits of some more invasive skin treatments, but without the downtime and is gentle enough for even the most sensitive skin.

Here is what she had to say, “No sleep, dehydration in combination with a bad diet is often reflected in your skin. Despite those qualities in my life, mine is glowing. In fact, in the past week since I had my HydraFacial with Maggie, I've had multiple people compliment my skin and ask me what I use on my face. There are fewer fine lines and my skin is brighter. The results were immediate! Thank you Maggie for helping me look and feel better. It has already improved my confidence.” Hearing such positive responses from my clients is always an encouragement and a pleasure – knowing that what I do helps people to feel more confident and have healthier, more radiant skin!

A Toast to Resveratrol

Posted on 凌晨12:28, under

By Jonny Bowden, PhD, CNS
Why this magic compound may be the closest thing to an antiaging elixir

Sorry. Don’t kill the messenger. Calorie restriction is the only strategy that has been consistently shown to extend life in every species studied so far. Feed rats about one-third less than they normally eat, and faster than you can say “Methuselah,” they live approximately 50 percent longer than their normal lifespan. It’s worked in yeast, fruit flies, mice, the aforementioned rats, and—most recently—in rhesus monkeys.

And though the likelihood of a long-term human trial comparing “free-eating” and “calorie-restricted” subjects over a couple of decades is pretty remote, all indications are that reducing calories would extend life in our own species just as it does in every other one that’s been studied. So that’s simple enough, right? Just reduce your calories by about 33 percent, and you’ll have a nice, long, healthy life. OK, class dismissed, lesson learned.

Yeah, right. As you can imagine, that particular strategy is not winning the popularity sweepstakes. Which is why there’s been so much attention focused on a little plant chemical called resveratrol.

To understand exactly how resveratrol exerts its antiaging magic, we have to go back to those calorie-deprived rats. Apparently, caloric restriction turns on a set of genes known as the sirtuin genes, which are considered to be major influencers of how long we live. “The sirtuin genes are the holy grail of medicine and nutrition,” says Mark Houston, MD. “These genes turn on or turn off different metabolic pathways that are designed to promote longevity and health.”

Back in 2003, David Sinclair, MD, a researcher at Harvard Medical School, began investigating the sirtuin genes. To everyone’s delight, Sinclair discovered that there was another way to turn on these genes. He and his associates published a now-famous paper reporting that plant compounds known as polyphenols could activate the human SIRT1 gene. And the polyphenol that seemed to do this best was resveratrol.

Resveratrol is found in red wine; the skin of young, unripe red grapes; grape seeds; purple grape juice; and, to a lesser extent, in peanuts and mulberries.

If resveratrol lives up to its promise, it may not only extend life, but also improve its quality. Resveratrol has been shown in studies to inhibit the growth of several cancer cell lines and tumors. It’s a powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory; it ramps up detoxification enzymes in the liver; protects the heart through several different mechanisms; and also protects brain cells.

So should you add resveratrol to your daily supplement regimen? I certainly think so, and I’m not alone. The total amount of resveratrol in a capsule isn’t as important as the amount of trans-resveratrol—the bioactive form that seems to have all the benefit.

The higher quality resveratrol products on the market are “standardized” for a certain percentage of trans-resveratrol. “No one knows the correct dose in humans,” says Houston, “but any amount should have health benefits.” The smart money is betting that 250 milligrams or more of the trans-resveratrol form should have an effect on aging and health. For 500-milligram capsules standardized to 20 percent trans that would be two-and-a-half capsules per day, three just to be safe!
