The Latest & Greatest in Mandelic Acid
Mandelic Acid, an alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA) named after the German mandel (almond) and derived from bitter almonds, has been studied extensively at the Gateway Aesthetic Institute and Laser Center in Salt Lake City, Utah, for the past three years. We’ve all heard the benefits of various alpha-hydroxy acids for years and they are commonly used in many of our skin care products, but this one looks to be one that will lead the pack.
Research originally began to further explore the antibiotic nature of mandelic acid in hopes that paitents who suffer from wrinkles and acne would see improvement. It is useful in treating inflammatory non-cystic acne, suppressing pigmentation, and rejuvenating photo-aged skin. Its benefits extend into preparation for laser peeling procedures and aiding in the healing process after laser surgery.
Stronger than glycolic acid, a widely used AHA, mandelic acid have been shown in open clinical trials to assist in the following skin care concerns:
- The appearance of fine lines and wrinkles improve in addition to a marked improvement in skin texture, without the skin irritation that can accompany the use of glycolic acid in high dosages.
- Those who suffer from acne, melasma, lentigenes, and fine photoaging damage (wrinkles, dull complexion, skin texture) have seen significant results with repeated peeling with mandelic acid.
- Trials on individuals with abnormal pigmentation saw a rapid improvement when treated with mandelic acid. For examples, those with melasma saw an improvement of up to 50% after 1 month of treatment.
- The antibiotic nature of mandelic acid has shown remarkable results on patients with acne that is resistant to both oral and topical antibiotics.
- Some of those with acne rosacea saw improvement with mandelic acid treatments.
- Patients who have undergone laser skin resurfacing with a post-op regime that includes mandelic acid have seen fewer infections and less inflammation.
